MIT Technology Review interviewed several teenagers aged 10 to 18 to understand their genuine thoughts on AI. Contrary to public expectations, the kids' attitudes are filled with nuance and contradiction.
While many admitted to using AI at least a little, they often showed indifference or even resistance. They aren't craving AI products the way they do iPhones. Key concerns and observations include:
- Creativity Anxiety: Fear that AI will lead to the end of creativity and critical thinking.
- Environmental Concerns: Some refuse to use AI due to its environmental impact.
- Academic Misconduct: Some admit their peers primarily use it for things they shouldn't, like writing papers.
The report suggests that teens want AI to be a tool that boosts learning rather than a machine that hijacks their thinking. Classrooms need to evolve alongside AI.
