Breaking the Memory Wall: How CXL Will Reshape AI Compute Infrastructure

Following the Future of Memory and Storage (FMS) event, analyst Ben Bajarin noted that the CXL standard is transitioning from a specification toward commercial deployment, expected to start next year in hyperscale compute clusters.
The article analyzes the "memory wall" challenge posed by AI inference workloads. As the size of context and KV caches explodes, the traditional server model of tying memory to a single processor has hit a bottleneck. CXL technology enables disaggregated and shared memory over a PCIe-based physical link, allowing memory pooling across devices to expand the available memory pool while keeping latency low enough for near-memory workloads.
