AT&T Consumes 45B Tokens Daily, Cuts Costs by 90% Shifting to Open Models

AT&T revealed that it currently consumes about 45 billion tokens per day, with 25% of its AI usage driven by open-source models. Driven by cost and data sovereignty considerations, the company plans to increase its use of open-source models to 70%-80%.
According to executives, switching from closed, proprietary models to open models has already resulted in savings of 80% to 90% for certain applications. Furthermore, ensuring that data is safe and secure from both a security and IP standpoint—referred to as AI sovereignty—has become truly paramount to the enterprise.
