Model Capability Matters Most: Can Tool Harnesses Mask Performance Flaws?
altryne · x · 2026-08-13
Commenting on the phenomenon where OpenAI's model significantly improved its ArcAGI score through optimized harnesses and tool usage, the author argues that as models become more capable, the importance of the external harness will naturally diminish. If the underlying reasoning capability of a model is weak (like early GPT-3), even the best harness cannot magically produce excellent performance. The harness is only impressive because the model itself is already powerful.
