Tailscale's Month-Long Hunt Uncovers 16-Year-Old SQLite Bug Causing Outages

Network service provider Tailscale published a detailed post-mortem explaining how they spent months tracking down the root cause of recent service instability: a rare race condition bug hidden deep in SQLite for 16 years.

Tailscale’s control plane shards rely on a single-writer SQLite architecture. During the investigation, their team collaborated with SQLite core developers to identify the WAL-Reset bug and even uncovered a second related flaw along the way. Both issues have now been fixed.
