Ex-Meta Engineer Exposes Big Tech's AI Metric Manipulation Tactics
Vjeux · x · 2026-08-13
Following Google's announcement of 1 billion monthly Gemini users, a former Meta employee highlighted the pervasive "stat counting" manipulation in big tech.
The employee revealed that during Meta's early AI rollout, the company tracked "daily active prompters." To boost this metric, the Messenger team integrated AI into the search bar, counting every standard search as an AI prompt. While this inflated the metrics, a subsequent user survey revealed the top reason people used Meta AI was "by accident." The author suggests Google's massive user numbers likely employ similar growth levers, noting that third-party data shows people overwhelmingly prefer ChatGPT.
