DeepMind researcher Iason Gabriel proposes four key dimensions for evaluating AI agents:
- Autonomy: Ability to perform actions without step-by-step external direction
- Efficacy: Ability to interact with and causally impact the environment, scaling with impact magnitude and environmental consequence
- Goal complexity: Capacity to achieve difficult goals involving long action sequences, decomposition, subgoal balancing, and feedback-based learning
- Generality: Ability to operate across different roles, contexts, and cognitively/economically valuable tasks
These dimensions form "agentic profiles" and serve as necessary and sufficient conditions for agenthood. For governance: autonomy shapes safe deployment architectures, efficacy intersects with risk, goal complexity influences alignment approaches, and generality informs economic and social impact assessment.
