App Store Shift: Paywalls Now Integrated Directly Into Onboarding

After sampling top 100 apps across multiple App Store categories, the author noted a major shift in design patterns: paywalls are now integrated directly into the onboarding flow.
This is a stark contrast to the playbook from a decade ago, which focused on driving DAUs, building habits, and then monetizing retained users. The author believes this reflects how hard mobile growth has become. Without an inherently viral product, developers buying installs must optimize ROAS immediately, as Day 0 is often the highest-intent moment.
This also signals worsening paid retention, as relying on passive renewals (breakage) is much harder to pull off today with ubiquitous subscription reminder emails.
