Are LLMs Killing CTFs? Security Research Faces a Skill Pipeline Crisis

After conversing with multiple DEF CON CTF finalists, a security researcher concluded that Large Language Models (LLMs) are completely destroying the traditional CTF ecosystem.

Instead of proving human intuition still matters, the reality is that modern CTFs have become "slot machines." Players are forced to token-maxx to gain an edge, and anyone refusing to use AI is easily outcompeted.

This trend has severe negative implications: the traditional pipeline for developing skills and expertise through grinding CTFs is broken. Juniors are rewarded for relying on AI rather than understanding underlying concepts, which also disadvantages those who cannot afford expensive AI access.
