FDE Demand to Surge 2100%: Only 2,000 Qualified Engineers in the US

As enterprises shift from simply accessing the best models to integrating them into profitable workflows, the Forward-Deployed Engineer (FDE) has become the AI industry's most sought-after specialist.
According to executive search firm Christian & Timbers, there are only about 2,000 engineers in the U.S. with the right mix of sector expertise and applied AI experience to drive enterprise ROI. Demand for these specialists is projected to surge by 2,100% by year's end.
A key trend highlighted in the report is that enterprises are increasingly building these teams in-house rather than borrowing them from AI labs. Companies want to retain full control over their data and competitive advantage, recognizing that deployment partners who also sell models have misaligned incentives.
