Debate: Is LLM Reasoning Just Gradient Descent or Actual Intelligence?

ctjlewis · x · 2026-08-12

An AI researcher shared a thread on X examining the nature of reasoning in frontier models, arguing that they possess internal circuitry enabling independent computation.

He compares this mechanism to human gestation: gradient descent is akin to embryonic development, which builds the physical structure of the brain. However, using that brain to later compute general relativity is an independent process. Thus, while models acquire their structure via gradient descent during training, the logical computation they exhibit during inference represents actual "intelligence" rather than mere statistical probability.
