OpenAI-Backed Paper Analyzes 17M Messages to Reveal Enterprise GenAI Usage

Dave Holtz, a visiting economics researcher at OpenAI, along with co-authors, has released a new working paper. The study analyzes over 17 million messages sent by workers across more than 1,500 organizations to systematically document how generative AI is actually being used in the workplace.
Economist Brian Albrecht highlighted the research, noting that the "diffusion" of AI technology remains a critical gap in understanding its medium-term economic impacts, which this paper helps to address.
