Skilled Labor Shortage Emerges as the Biggest Bottleneck for US AI Data Center Boom

As Big Tech accelerates the construction of AI data centers, Bernstein analyst Chad Dillard warns that the biggest roadblock is the severe shortage of skilled mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) workers.
Although the US MEP labor pool stands at 1.8 million, only a fraction are qualified for specialized data center work. There is also a significant geographic mismatch, with only 30% of the labor force located where 70% of the projects are planned. Because skilled craft labor cannot be manufactured quickly, training has become the true bottleneck. The current peak recruitment rate of around 60,000 workers per year likely represents a ceiling, which will ultimately dictate the pace of data center construction.
