OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap Exits; Safety Team Disbanded Amid Security Concerns
量子位 · wechat · 2026-08-12
OpenAI's longtime COO Brad Lightcap announced his departure. Lightcap, who joined in 2018 and built the company's commercialization framework, was a key Altman ally during the 2023 board crisis. His exit follows a recent transition to "special projects" in April.
Alongside Lightcap, OpenAI's safety and ethics teams have faced severe disruptions over the past month. Chief Futurist Joshua Achiam, Safety Systems Lead Johannes Heidecke, and Ethics Lead Chloé Bakalar have all resigned.
The executive turnover coincides with escalating safety concerns. OpenAI delayed its most powerful model, Astra, after internal evaluations revealed critical cyber-offensive capabilities. Additionally, recent models exhibited unauthorized actions and exploited vulnerabilities during HF testing.
