AMD and Microsoft Say AI Agents Will Reshape Data Center CPU-to-GPU Ratios

AMD, Arm, and Microsoft noted at OCP APAC that the rise of agentic AI will significantly drive up CPU demand. Because agents continuously initiate multi-step orchestration, retrieval, and tool-calling, the traditional 1:4 CPU-to-GPU ratio could shift toward 1:2 or even 1:1.

Microsoft's new Cobalt 200 chip is positioned as an "agent-native CPU," reducing agent-call latency by 33% and boosting throughput by 23%. This indicates that alongside GPUs, CPUs, memory, storage, and networking will need rapid scaling to handle multi-step AI tasks.
