Bootstrapper's Playbook: How to Land Your First 100 Paid Users
kylegawley · x · 2026-08-12
Independent developer Kyle Gawley shares his customer acquisition playbook. He grew his software products to 22,000 users and generated over $1m+ in revenue.
He released a free 5-day email course detailing how to secure the first 100 paid users. Key strategies include:
- Pre-sales validation: Successfully pre-sold to 7 users before writing a single line of code.
- Cold DM openers: Developed a direct message opener that achieves a 90% response rate.
- PR & Content: Leveraged a magazine article feature to acquire 100 users overnight.
- Growth channels: Outlines the exact channels used to scale products from 0 to 22,000 users.
In his post, Gawley also pushes back against the narrative that "normal people will build their own apps." He argues that an average person won't pay premium subscriptions, developer licenses, and API hosting fees—let alone spend weeks learning to code—when they could simply pay $2 for an app that already exists.
