Running Video Generation on 16GB Macs: Open-Source VPIPE Engine Breakthrough
TgoAI · reddit · 2026-08-12
A developer has open-sourced VPIPE, a C++/Metal inference runtime tailored for Apple Silicon. Instead of relying on PyTorch or MLX, it uses a custom Metal backend for model execution.
The author recently integrated support for the MiniMax H3 video and audio generation model. Using weight streaming, a base 15-inch M5 MacBook Air with 16GB of RAM can generate a 0.5MP, 24fps, 3.75-second video in about 15 minutes. The VPIPE package is only 25MB in size and also supports local inference for LLMs, VLMs, image generation, ASR, and quantization.
