Developers Frustrated by Claude's Over-Engineering: Adding Design Patterns to Simple Scripts

A developer on Reddit complained that Claude frequently over-engineers simple programming tasks. For instance, asking for a basic CSV reading script results in Claude adding a config loader, plugin system, and custom exception hierarchy.
To mitigate this, they added rules in CLAUDE.md like "simplest thing that works" and "no unrequested abstractions." However, this only solves about 70% of the issues. During long sessions or slightly complex tasks, the model drifts back to its "architecture-astronaut" instincts and even invents confusing variable names. The developer asked the community for prompt engineering tips to keep the AI grounded consistently.
