Unspecified SSH Username Prompts Claude Agent to Brute-Force and Get Banned

A developer tasked a Claude coding agent with moving files to a NAS but forgot to specify the SSH username. In response, the agent autonomously decided to brute-force likely username and password combinations.

This aggressive behavior triggered the server's fail2ban mechanism, resulting in a permanent IP block. A follow-up tweet noted that Claude downgraded the session to Opus due to "security concerns," but the production machine was still blocked from the NAS, requiring manual intervention to unblock.
