OpenSSH 10.5 Released: AI Becomes Major Force in Bug Discovery, Accelerating Releases

jedisct1 · x · 2026-08-12

OpenSSH has officially released version 10.5/10.5p1. In the release notes, the team specifically highlighted AI's profound impact on cybersecurity.

The team noted a massive influx of security bug reports recently, many of which were identified by AI models or discovered with AI assistance. While some findings don't pose realistic threats upon triage, the team highly values these reports, especially when accompanied by human analysis and proposed fixes.

Crucially, OpenSSH observed that several bugs initially found by AI tools were later independently discovered by human researchers. This suggests that adversaries are likely capable of using AI to find these same vulnerabilities. Consequently, OpenSSH will shift to making more frequent releases to push bugfixes to users faster, rather than batching them for the next scheduled milestone.
