Google's AMIE Medical AI Outperforms Human Doctors in Diagnostic Accuracy and Reasoning

Google's AMIE demonstrates powerful diagnostic capabilities in simulated video consultations. It uses a multi-agent architecture: one for dialogue, one updating diagnoses in the background, and another continuously watching and listening for subtle clinical clues (like a dry cough), while also guiding physical exams.
This architecture reduces average response latency from 21.4 to 2.6 seconds. Across 300 simulated consultations involving 100 cases, AMIE ranked the correct diagnosis first 91% of the time (vs. 77% for primary care physicians), scored 90% on clinical reasoning (vs. 76%), and 74% on perception and examination (vs. 47%).
