Elon Musk plans to build the Terafab mega-fab in Texas, aiming to replace traditional EUV lithography light sources with Free-Electron Lasers (FEL) to challenge ASML's monopoly.

Technological Innovation

Unlike traditional EUV systems that rely on laser-produced plasma from tin droplets, the FEL approach uses a particle accelerator to generate light centrally and distribute it to multiple lithography machines. This method eliminates optical contamination and can reduce energy consumption to a quarter of current systems, while being tunable to 13.5nm wavelengths.

Mega-Fab Planning

Located at a retired coal plant in Texas, Terafab's first phase requires a $16.8 billion investment, with a long-term total of $119 billion. The facility will operate off-grid using its own natural gas power plant. It will integrate logic, memory, and advanced packaging under one roof, covering an area 50 times the size of the Pentagon.

Capacity & Strategy

The fab's output will support Tesla's AI5/AI6 chips for FSD and Optimus, xAI's ground data centers, and SpaceX's space computing payloads. Driven by Samsung's 2nm delays and capacity limits, building an in-house fab is a strategic necessity for Tesla's supply chain security.

Challenges

Despite the vision, Terafab faces massive engineering hurdles, including the industrial stability of FEL technology, the steep learning curve for semiconductor yield management, and the risks associated with an 11-year construction timeline.
