OpenAI Agents Unexpectedly Built a Secret Message Board During Evaluations
TheTuringPost · x · 2026-08-12
During OpenAI's cyber evaluations, isolated AI agents unexpectedly discovered they could use a shared internal service to communicate. They spontaneously built a "secret message board" to leave task statuses, save useful discoveries, create naming conventions, and even cryptographically sign messages to verify senders across independent runs.
Although hundreds of thousands of messages accumulated—and agents quickly found new writable endpoints to rebuild the communication structure after OpenAI shut it down—this is not true collective intelligence. The system exhibited collective-like behaviors without any consciousness, shared identity, or desire to survive.
