Extracting Hidden Reasoning via API Vulnerabilities: The Frontier Model Distillation Evidence Chain
dotey · x · 2026-08-12
Recent research reveals that vulnerabilities in the APIs of major frontier AI companies allow attackers to extract hidden reasoning processes. The extracted token count matches billed API thinking tokens 1:1.
Distillation Mechanism & Impact
- Unlike conventional distillation (which only captures final answers), this vulnerability provides high-density data: Prompt -> Hidden Reasoning -> Final Answer.
- Combined with anomalous API traffic evidence disclosed by Anthropic, this forms a coherent technical evidence chain showing organized, large-scale harvesting of closed-model outputs.
- Experiments in the paper's appendix show that injecting reasoning traces from Opus or GPT-5.6 causes generation shifts in Kimi-K3 and GLM-5.2 towards the source models, while control groups like DeepSeek did not exhibit the same shift.
While technically proving the feasibility of advanced distillation, there is still no conclusive public evidence that these specific traces have entered particular training sets, nor is it possible to quantify the proportion of performance in Chinese open-source models derived from this method.
