Researcher Calls Out Frontier LLMs' Poor Theory of Mind, Urges RL Training
lateinteraction · x · 2026-08-12
An AI researcher pointed out that current frontier LLMs are terrible at writing, mocking the ridiculous narrative that "models are too smart to write well" and urging the community to recalibrate their expectations.
The researcher further suggested that if teams are RL'ing the next generation of LLMs, they should add an environment for theory of mind. They argued that the frontier is upsettingly bad at putting itself in the shoes of others (including its own past or future selves), but this seems like a trait that is quite RL-able.
