Expert Warns AI Watermarks Could Increase Code Entropy, Harming Coding Agents

AI researcher Ross Wightman discussed the potential side effects of embedding watermarks in AI-generated code. He noted that routine programming and documentation tasks typically require "low entropy" (i.e., the most obvious and canonical implementations). However, current coding agents already tend to generate overly complex "high entropy" code, which often causes engineering pain.
He worries that forcing watermarking mechanisms could further nudge code generation in the wrong direction. Replying to a question about watermark visibility, based on his knowledge of SynthID, he stated that the watermark is extremely subtle and unnoticeable. It doesn't simply generate redundant text; if the model's output is tiny, the watermark naturally lacks strength.
