Mathematician Shares OpenAI Summit Vision: Why Math Progress Could Stall in the AI Era

Mathematician @littmath shared insights from a recent 'Future of Mathematics' summit at OpenAI, where the working premise was that AI will become robustly superhuman at math.
He explored a scenario where, despite immense AI capabilities, human mathematical progress could actually stall:
- Paper Explosion & Dilution: Using the weekly upload count of combinatorics papers on arXiv since late 2021 as an example, he predicts a massive explosion of AI-generated outputs that humans won't be able to verify or absorb.
- Institutional Fragility: Current academic mechanisms for rewarding high-quality science, building human capital, and allocating prestige are not robust enough to handle highly capable AI.
- Unsustainable Practice: If models handle theory-building, conjecturing, and proving autonomously, humans will merely direct compute. He questions why anyone would sustainably devote resources to this, fearing it could lead to a dead end for the profession.
Despite these systemic risks, he remains broadly optimistic, suggesting that this exogenous shock will expose existing flaws in academia, giving us an opportunity to fix them and allowing mathematics to adapt and flourish.
