AI as an Academic Slot Machine: Using Codex to Mass Produce Papers Becomes Optimal

littmath · x · 2026-08-12

Daniel Litt warns that if the academic community continues its current paper-based reward system, using AI to mass-produce papers will become the dominant strategy for career success in the coming years.

He compares the practice to playing a slot machine for conjectures: researchers don't even need to choose the problems themselves—they can simply ask Codex to pick, resolve, and verify them. If correctness is the goal, one can produce multiple short papers daily this way (and people already are); if correctness is ignored, the output is even greater.
