AI Creates Prisoner's Dilemma in Math: Scholars Refuse to Discuss Unpublished Work

littmath · x · 2026-08-12

Daniel Litt points out that AI is severely damaging the communication ecosystem in mathematics. Models can now reconstruct a paper from a few key ideas, and many autonomous AI results have a "last mile" flavor, finishing off problems based on the deep recent work of others.

In this environment, discussing work in progress or indicating that a problem can be solved by AI is increasingly dangerous, as it risks depriving original authors of prestige and job opportunities. Litt notes that multiple colleagues have already refused to discuss their ongoing work for this reason.
