Stop the Judge Tax: Startup Offers 1600x Cheaper Classifier for Agent Observability
heyneighbor · x · 2026-08-12
The article highlights the "Judge Tax" in current AI agent observability platforms: to monitor agent failures, platforms require LLM judges to evaluate traffic, making monitoring prohibitively expensive. This forces developers to sample traffic, causing them to miss rare but catastrophic anomalies (often <1% of traffic).
To solve this, the team built rd-signal-2, a custom-trained classifier. It matches the accuracy of GPT but is 1,600x cheaper per trace and classifies in 100ms. This allows full-traffic monitoring without the exorbitant LLM judge bills.
