Anthropic Leans into Biology Pre-IPO; Academics Slam Labs Abandoning Basic Research

Andrew Curran noted that during pre-IPO meetings, Anthropic informed investors of its plan to lean harder into biology and healthcare applications. The goal is to develop "miracle cures" to mitigate negative public sentiment against the AI industry.
In response, AI researcher pfau quoted the tweet critically: "Sure would be a tragedy if there were a frontier AI lab out there that was already making Nobel-level contributions to life sciences but was forced by management to pivot away from basic research towards LLM products."
