Gemini Hits 1B Users, Open Weights Downloads Barely Match

Google announced 1 billion users for Gemini and 1 billion downloads for its open weights model Gemma. This equates to roughly one open weights download per Gemini user.

Joseph Jacks points out that for mainstream AI consumers, the friction of adopting open weights still vastly outweighs the fundamental value propositions like cost, control, and data privacy. Until startups remove this friction without killing these benefits, hosted models (both closed and open) will continue to dominate adoption curves.
