Vercel CTO: Open-Weight Models Lack Guardrails, Everything Hackable Will Be Hacked
cramforce · x · 2026-08-12
Malte Ubl, CTO of Vercel, discussed how advancements in AI models are reshaping cybersecurity. He noted that defenders currently hold an advantage because they can utilize stronger closed-source frontier models for defense compared to open-weight models.
However, this advantage is temporary. The bad news is that near-frontier open-weight models (like Kimi K3) are already available for offensive security research with virtually no cybersecurity safeguards. The good news is that current frontier models, with a few exceptions, are ready to perform defensive tasks today. Ubl urged security teams to stop waiting for perfect tools and immediately leverage existing AI capabilities to build their defenses.
