Bloomberg: OpenAI Buys Back $7B in Employee Shares at $852B Valuation
rohanpaul_ai · x · 2026-08-12
According to Bloomberg, OpenAI bought back roughly $7 billion of employee shares itself at an $852 billion valuation.
This move differs from previous employee stock sales, which were typically purchased by outside investors like SoftBank and Thrive Capital. The tender offer allows current and former employees to liquidate part of their equity without waiting for an IPO.
OpenAI's previous major employee sale valued the company at around $50 billion and moved $6.6 billion in stock. The latest transaction not only marks a significant jump in valuation but also a fundamental shift in the source of liquidity.
