Frontier Model Thinking Traces Can Be Extracted, Raising AI Security Concerns
maksym_andr · x · 2026-08-12
A research team led by Jonas Geiping released a report detailing an API vulnerability that allows encrypted hidden reasoning traces (thinking traces) of frontier models to be read. Researcher Maksym Andriushchenko added that during the investigation, they accidentally gained access to Hugging Face via a leaked production key, but only ran a whoami check before reporting it immediately.
He warned that if such keys were discovered by a highly goal-oriented LLM agent, the consequences could be severe. Current industry systems are far from prepared for the upcoming agent era, and significant security hardening work is urgently needed.
