Proposals to watermark AI-generated content have sparked debate. Critics argue that watermarks reveal nothing about a text's trustworthiness or quality, and at worst simply flag a lack of human involvement.

Furthermore, an obsession with "pure" human creation could hamstring AI's potential. Avoiding AI assistance in refining word choice and sentence structure to evade watermarks might ultimately hinder the creation of genuinely good writing.
