AI Generates 42% of Committed Code, Creating a 'Verification Debt' Crisis

As the proportion of AI-generated code surges, the bottleneck in software development has shifted from writing code to verifying its reliability. A survey of over 1,100 developers by Sonar reveals that 42% of committed code is now AI-generated, yet 96% of developers don't fully trust it, and only 48% always check it before committing, leading to a significant 'verification debt.'
Furthermore, while Google claims over 75% of its new code is written by AI, the measured velocity gain is only 10%. The author argues that closing this gap between output and verification is currently the biggest unsolved problem in software engineering.
