AI Code Quality Depends on the Constraints You Set Around Agents

In a recent essay, Google engineering leader Addy Osmani argues that traditional human code reviews won't scale as AI agents generate massive amounts of code. Future software quality will depend entirely on the "constraints" developers set within the testing harness and operating system around the agents.
These constraints act as quality gates, encompassing conventional unit, property, and acceptance tests, alongside mutation testing and complexity metrics. By strictly enforcing these automated constraints, teams can reliably deliver high-quality production code even when agents generate thousands of changes daily.
