Six Major AI Giants Sign EU AI Text Watermarking Code, Sparking Controversy

OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Mistral have signed the EU Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content, committing to invisibly watermark text (xAI did not sign). This has sparked debate: critics argue it's a regulation that protects the moat of centralized AI while crushing smaller operators with compliance costs. Furthermore, the fingerprinting scheme could distort inference by deviating from the highest probability token, degrading quality and increasing hallucination risks.
