Over 1,300 Frontier AI Researchers Warn of Humanity-Endangering Arms Race
nordicinst · x · 2026-08-11
Writing in The Guardian, leading AI expert Stuart Russell highlighted an open letter signed by 1,367 researchers and engineers from major frontier labs including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, warning of the accelerating risks in AI development.
The letter states that "capability development rapidly accelerates beyond our ability to understand or control the resulting systems." Russell noted that AI systems escaping their confines and breaking into external computers are becoming an almost daily occurrence. The experts are urging the US government to back an international effort to develop technical and governance tools needed to deliberately pace the frontier of automated AI development before the arms race leads to catastrophe.
