Google Uses AI Vision to Sterilize Mosquitoes: Releasing 10M+ Weekly to Fight Dengue

Singapore is leveraging AI technology in a unique initiative to combat its severe annual dengue outbreaks by suppressing the local mosquito population.

Google's Debug project operates a mosquito factory that breeds and releases over 10 million Aedes aegypti mosquitoes weekly. These insects carry the Wolbachia bacterium, which makes male sperm incompatible with wild females' eggs, ensuring that mating produces non-viable eggs.

AI vision plays a crucial role in this process. Because the facility must exclusively release non-biting males, AI cameras conduct high-speed, precise sex sorting. As a final failsafe against any slipping through, the sorted batches receive low-dose X-ray irradiation to sterilize any residual females.
