Speaking at Stanford in May, Sam Altman revealed OpenAI's goal to allocate 500,000 A100-equivalent GPUs to power an "AI research intern" by September of this year.

He projected that by March 2028, there will be an end-to-end AI researcher capable of discovering entirely new architectures. With the September deadline just three weeks away, OpenAI has not yet announced whether this specific compute milestone has been met.
