EU Mandates AI Watermarks for Claude, Criticized as Ineffective and Punishing Compliance
emmanuelvivier · x · 2026-08-11
The EU is now requiring AI providers like Anthropic's Claude to embed invisible watermarks and C2PA metadata in generated text and files for transparency.
However, critics argue the policy is counterproductive in practice: watermarks are easily broken by simple rephrasing or translation, failing to stop actual fraudsters. Moreover, it penalizes compliant companies while bad actors using open-source or unregulated models ignore the rules, and it risks creating absurd false positives where minor AI-assisted edits flag entire documents as AI-generated.
