Google Distinguished Engineer Amin Vahdat draws an analogy between current AI infrastructure and the invention of the steam engine. He notes that just as James Watt's efficiency improvements triggered an explosion in demand via Jevons' Paradox, AI will act as a "brain multiplier" rather than reducing overall work.
He emphasizes that current intelligence supply is vastly insufficient to meet grand challenges like curing diseases or providing personalized education. Increased compute efficiency will inevitably lead to an application boom.
