Silicon Valley is currently caught in a frenzy of hyperproductivity. According to industry observers, professionals are trapped in a vicious cycle: seeing others work 996 and brag about their hustle creates pressure to do the same, just as witnessing others raise monster rounds triggers a fear of missing out.
This phenomenon is described as a mix of megalomania and fear. Although 90% of people recognize they are burned out and working at an unsustainable rate, capitalism waits for no one. The author notes that one day, people will wake up and realize that what they truly wanted—humanity, family, nature, and community—was available for free all along, without needing to burn out to achieve it.
