Reviewer Uses LLM in Rebuttal Phase, Sparking Calls to Reform NeurIPS
HildeKuehne · x · 2026-08-11
An AI researcher complained that a reviewer is using an LLM during the discussion phase of a top academic conference. He urged peers to stop offloading judgment and nuance to AI, and to write reviews themselves.
To address such issues, he proposed fixes for NeurIPS: remove the useless discussion period; limit to a 1-page rebuttal with no LLM-generated discussions; separate preliminary and final ratings; and desk reject papers authored by reviewers who fail to submit final ratings.
