Prominent VC investor Matt Turck tweeted a summary of a constant pattern across tech paradigm shifts: the quality of underlying data remains the ultimate bottleneck.
He outlined four distinct eras:
- Big Data era: Data science models are great, but the underlying data is bad.
- Modern data stack era: Dashboards are great, but the underlying data is bad.
- Gen AI era: Chatbots are great, but the underlying data is bad.
- Agentic AI era: Agents are great, but the underlying data is bad.
This serves as a reminder that while model architectures evolve, robust data pipelines and high-quality data foundations are still the deciding factors for successful AI implementation.
