Will AGI Compute Become Ubiquitous? Rebutting the Monopoly Argument
davidpattersonx · x · 2026-08-11
In response to the view that 'open source plays no role in AGI because training top models requires trillions of dollars and massive data centers, leading to a single winner,' a counter-argument has emerged.
The rebuttal suggests that when AI reaches its ultimate limit (capable of perfectly solving any problem), all models will converge on the same capability. At that point, the compute required for such peak performance might no longer be rare, implying that compute barriers will eventually drop, breaking the monopoly.
