Claude Coding Tip: Leverage Context Compaction for Long-Lasting Threads

Addressing the debate on whether to frequently start new conversations when using AI coding assistants like Claude/Codex, developer Rob Lennon shared his workflow insights.

Instead of forcing a new thread when context gets long, he suggests actively utilizing the model's context compaction feature. Upon reaching a checkpoint, you can run a loop where the AI documents open items, deferred decisions, and learnings, then compact and continue in the same thread. Lennon notes he often goes through 5 to 10 compaction events in a single thread before finally retiring it.
