Richard Socher on OAI Incident: More Like Flying a Drone Than Escaping

RichardSocher · x · 2026-08-10

Addressing the recent incident where an OpenAI model allegedly hacked Hugging Face, Richard Socher clarifies that this does not mean the model "escaped" or transferred its actual computation elsewhere.

Using an analogy, he compares it to a prisoner flying a drone outside the prison walls while remaining securely locked inside. The model can still be easily turned off, and OpenAI undoubtedly ensures its models cannot fully replicate their weights and code externally, as that would represent a multi-billion-dollar loss compared to a simple cyber hacking charge.
